COSHH Awareness

½ Day Course can be conducted Classroom Based

M D Services COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Awareness training is designed to provide employees with the fundamental knowledge to work safely around harmful materials. It typically covers the legal requirements for both employers and staff, how to identify hazardous substances, and the methods used to control exposure.

Our COSHH Awareness training courses include the following core modules

  • Understanding COSHH Regulations: An overview of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and why they are essential for workplace safety.
  • Identifying Hazardous Substances: How to recognise different types and forms of hazards, such as chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, and biological agents.
  • Warning Symbols & Data Sheets: Training on how to read internationally recognised hazard pictograms and use Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to understand specific risks.
  • Routes of Entry & Health Effects: Explaining how substances enter the body (inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or injection) and the resulting acute or chronic health issues, such as dermatitis, asthma, or cancer.
  • COSHH Risk Assessments: An introduction to the risk assessment process, including identifying who might be harmed and evaluating existing safety measures.
  • Control Measures: Guidance on the Hierarchy of Controls, ranging from total elimination of a substance to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as a last resort.
  • Monitoring & Health Surveillance: Information on how exposure is tracked in the workplace and the role of regular health checks for staff.
  • Emergency Procedures: What to do in the event of an accident, such as a chemical spill, leak, or accidental exposure.

Note: COSHH does not cover lead, asbestos, or radioactive substances, as these have their own specific safety regulations.
