SQA - Confined Spaces

Medium-risk confined space training is designed for individuals who enter or supervise work in environments where there is a realistic expectation of a specified risk (such as toxic gas or limited oxygen) but where entry can still be managed with standard safety procedures. These spaces typically include sewers, tunnels, or vaults with restricted access but no immediate need for full breathing apparatus.

Core Training Details

  • Duration:  2-day course combining 50% theory and 50% practical assessment.
  • Accreditation: M D S course is Qualification Scotland (SQA) Accredited 
  • Validity: Certifications are valid for 3 years, after which a 1-day refresher or full requalification is required.

Key Skills Taught

  • Safe Entry & Exit: Using tripods, winches, and fall arrest systems.
  • Atmospheric Monitoring: Using and interpreting gas detectors.
  • Emergency Response: Use of emergency escape breathing apparatus (EEBA) for self-rescue.
  • Roles: Covers duties for both the entrant and the entry controller (top person).

Requirements for Candidates

  • Fitness: You must be physically fit and may need to sign a medical self-assessment form.
  • Grooming: You should be clean-shaven to ensure a proper seal for escape breathing apparatus.
  • PPE: Delegates need to bring their own hard hat, safety boots, and gloves for practical.
  • Identification: Valid photo ID (passport or driving licence) is mandatory for certification.
  • Practical Assessment as you will be crawling in the confined space you can choose to wear knee pads if you wish.
